Statistics on Special Educational Needs from the Federal Statistical Office

Introduction

In 2024/25, around 1,031,600 pupils attended compulsory schooling, of whom 1.2% were in a special class (introductory class, class for foreign-language speakers or other special class) and 2.0% were in a special school class.

  • The proportion of pupils in compulsory education receiving enhanced special educational support was 4.2%.
  • The proportion of pupils with a curriculum adaptation was 5.3%.

Use of the data

The statistics on special education provide national and cantonal indicators on separate classes, special education schools, enhanced measures and curriculum adaptations.

Content of the data

The statistics present the following indicators for Switzerland (2024/2025) interactively and by canton:

  • Separate classes
  • Special education schools (school canton)
  • Special education schools (residence canton)
  • Enhanced measures
  • Curriculum adaptation

A further set of statistics allows for a comparison of the key figures with those for the 2023/24 academic year.
